Guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas celebrates the launch of his new album Portraits for Guitar on Convivium Records, in the company of composers Flores Chaviano, Walfrido Domínguez, Stephen Goss and Dominique Le Gendre.

Portraits for Guitar, brings together bold contemporary voices and rich cultural traditions from the Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and European sound worlds. Performed by Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas and Helen Sanderson, this unique album weaves together rhythm, vivid colour, contrast, and a deep sense of travel and place into an irresistibly compelling and engaging musical narrative.

Cuban-born, London-based guitarist Ahmed Dickinson Cárdenas is an internationally acclaimed classical guitarist and a passionate advocate for contemporary and Latin American music. His work brings together exceptional musicians, composers and cultural traditions, creating projects that place the guitar at the centre of new musical conversations.

A graduate of the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Ahmed has performed at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre and Queen Elizabeth Hall, as well as internationally across Europe, the Americas and beyond. His performances and recordings have been featured by BBC Radio 3, and his work has received recognition including two Cubadisco Awards and nominations from Songlines.

Ahmed is particularly known for his long-standing commitment to Cuban music and for bringing overlooked repertoire into the international concert repertoire. Through his record label Cubafilin Records, he has championed Cuban composers and musicians, while his work as a performer, transcriber and curator has created new connections between Cuban musical heritage and contemporary classical practice.

For this launch event, Ahmed is joined by Helen Sanderson, with the composers also present to celebrate the release of the album.
